Chapter 896
Memories from the past tugged at Marguerite's heart, dissolving the irritation she'd felt earlier in the day. Almost
without realizing it, she wandered over to where the others were gathered.
Hayes was crouched on the ground, picking something up. The moment he spotted Marguerite, his eyes lit up
and he gave her a beaming smile.
"Mom, you're here!"
Marguerite's gaze drifted to the kitchen counter, where a small saucepan was bubbling away. The savory aroma
of instant noodles and eggs filled the air, making her mouth water.
"Where did you get a stove?"
She was pretty sure Silas hadn't brought one with him.
"Ms. Marguerite, the stove was our prize for winning a gthis afternoon!" Hayes announced proudly.
"You three won it?"
Hayes shot Marguerite a disgruntled look, his voice full of mock complaint. "That's because you took a nap all
afternoon, Mom. | had to team up with Uncle Silas for the games."
Then, turning to Margot, he added, "There are dandelions over there. Want to go pick some?"

Margot instantly understood Hayes's real intention. They were trying to give their dad and mom stime
alone-classic kid teamwork.
With a grin, she agreed, grabbed Hayes's hand, and the pair dashed off, giggling.
Silas, meanwhile, kept his head down, focused on cooking. He didn't so much as glance in Marguerite's direction.
Marguerite felt a storm brewing inside her. She couldn't hold back anymore and finally summoned her courage.
"Can we talk?"
Silas's hands froze for a moment before he lifted his gaze to her, only to look away almost immediately.
"Talk about what?"
His indifference stung, and Marguerite's frustration quickly turned to hurt. She wanted to lash out, but the words
caught in her throat. After a long silence, she managed only a single question.
"What did | ever do to offend you?"
"Nothing," he replied without hesitation.
Marguerite stared at him as if he'd
just spoken nonsense. "Nothing? Seriously? Yesterday at the
office-did you or did you not givea hard time? You wouldn't let the press conference thing go, you made me
look bad in front of everyone. Wasn't that you?"
Her voice rose, catching Silas off guard. He turned off the burner and looked straight at her, his eyes unwavering.
"As an investor, did | say anything that wasn't true? And don't forget, when Maurice's wife tried to slap you, | was
the one who stepped in."
Marguerite fell silent. Fine, she had to admit-when Daphne tried to hit her yesterday, Silas had, in fact, swooped
in to save the day.
"But you mockedafterwards,
didn't you? Even today, you couldn't help but criticize my photos! Whether my smile looks natural whether I'm
stiff in front of the camera-what does that have to do with you?"
Still fuming, Marguerite turned to leave-but Silas suddenly grabbed her sleeve.
"Marguerite, it's because there's nothing between us that | treat you the sas anyone else."
She whipped around. "So you make a habit of giving ordinary people a hard tfor no reason?"
"It's not about making things hard for anyone. | just speak my mind. That's why | don't have many friends."
He sounded so detached, but Marguerite caught a flicker of something heavy in his expression.
Once again, she found herself at a loss for words.
Why was it that, sharp-tongued as she was, she always seemed to lose her footing around Silas?
Annoyed, she fanned herself with
her hand, trying to cool off. But in
the motion, she accidentally tugged
at her collar, and her sapphire pendant slipped out, glinting in the light.
The pendant spun slightly, catching the lamp's glow-and Silas caught sight of the
tiny inscription: "Peace and Joy."
In that instant, a rush of blurred memories surged through his mind. He saw a
woman's silhouette, running away from him, her face never turning back.
He tried desperately to remember, but his head felt like it was about to split open with pain.
Clutching his temples, Silas swayed, nearly collapsing.
Startled, Marguerite rushed to support him. "Silas! Silas! Where's your medication? Did you bring any
painkillers?"
All she got in response was his ragged breathing and the sight of him crumpling to
the floor.
Panic seized her. She immediately called for an ambulance and rode with Silas to the hospital through the night.
