Chapter 880

Teresa paused, unwilling to give up. "How do you know he won't help us? How can you be sure if we don't at

least try?"

"Sky Eagle's got a real attitude," Hayes replied. "He never takes jobs from anyone, and nobody dares to even

ask."

Teresa's expression was a mix of confusion and disappointment. She bit her lip, clearly frustrated.

Hayes looked just as crestfallen when he finished speaking. The two children turned away in unison, resting their

chins in their hands, faces serious well beyond their years.

If Sky Eagle wouldn't help, their only hope was Little Mute now.

Hopefully, he really could recreate the USB drive.

"Oh, right—Little Mute, | just thought of something," Teresa piped up.

Hayes turned to her. "What is it?"

"Even if we fix the microchip and Dad's headaches stop, he still won't remember the past. He won't know that

Mom is his wife."

Hayes' hopeful expression faded. "Dad's amnesia... | really don't know what to do about it. The only thing | can

think of is for us to play matchmaker behind the scenes—maybe if we keep bringing them together, it'll jog his

memory."

The idea instantly excited Teresa. She'd wanted to do exactly that for ages.

Now that she had Little Mute on her side, she felt a lot more confident about pulling it off.

But suddenly, she thought of Maurice-how he'd once pointed a gun at her, how he'd kidnapped her and used her

as leverage.

So, the little girl waved her hands anxiously. "We can't! If Maurice finds out, it'll be dangerous."

Hayes gently took Teresa's hand, his gaze surprisingly firm for someone so young. "Maurice took a bullet for

Mom yesterday. He won't recover that quickly. We have to make the most of this time!"

"Is Mom okay?" Teresa asked, breathless.

"She's fine," Hayes reassured her.

Teresa's cheeks flushed with excitement. "That's great! Serves Maurice right! Little Mute, | guess that means

we're trading secrets now. But | can't reveal myself

to Mom just yet-you have to promise to keep this between us! Manley isn't allowed to say a word either!"

Hayes nodded solemnly and sealed the pact with a high-five.

He looked her straight in the eye, then suddenly put his hands on Teresa's shoulders, worried. "Teresa, is that

everything? You're not keeping anything from me, are you?"

Hayes' gaze felt like it could see right through her. Teresa's heart skipped a beat, and she started to panic a little.

She had told Hayes most of what she'd experienced over the past six months, but not everything—she'd held

sthings back.

Her thoughts flashed to half a year ago—

She and her dad had escaped with

the help of sdoctors and

nurses making their way to the edge of a forest. The adults, afraid of

getting caught, left them beneath a tree, promising to send help.

A short while after they'd gone, Teresa saw an elderly woman in elegant clothes

approaching through the trees.

The woman said to Teresa,

"Remember, from now on your dad's

nis Silas. If you want to keep

him safe, when he wakes up, you

need to make sure he wears this mask."

She pressed a mask into Teresa's hands.

Teresa stared at her, bewildered. "Who are you? Did the doctors and nurses send you to help us?"

The old woman didn't answer her

question. Instead, she smiled kindly and said, "It doesn't matter whol am, little one. We'll meet again very soon."

So she wasn't sent by the doctors or nurses?

"How do | know | can trust you?" Teresa asked, uncertain.

The woman's smile was warm and gentle as she patted Teresa's head. "You will. Just remember what we talked

about today-and don't tell anyone."

Teresa wanted to doubt her, but the woman didn't seem like a bad person.

Besides, Maurice was still hunting for her and her dad. Changing their names seemed like the safest option.

With that realization, Teresa's eyes softened as she looked at the woman.

"Don't tell anyone? Not even Dad?"

"Especially not him. Take care of yourself, and look after your dad too. Until next time, sweetheart."

With that, the woman turned and disappeared into the forest.

She'd said they'd meet again soon, but half a year had gone by, and Teresa hadn't seen her since.

That was the secret Teresa still kept—and she wasn't sure if she should tell Hayes.
