Chapter 1091

"Now, it's cto this-Thaddeus has to choose: does he want the crown, or will he claw his way out of the pit of

his own sins?"

Chasel fell silent for a moment, sighing softly. "But | think he'll choose the crown. A man who's stood at the very

top can't bear to fall all the way down again. Especially someone as proud and stubborn as he is."

"The Abernathy Group... Thaddeus nearly gave his life to build it. | was his wife for three years. No one knows

better than | do what he went through to get here."

Evadne shook her head, frustration clouding her features. "Even if it costs him everything, he'll never let go of

the Abernathy Group."

"Addiction isn't something you can cure with a pill-willpower is the only thing that can pull you through. All | can

do is help ease the pain. I'm sorry, Evadne." Chasel's voice was tight, edged with bitterness.

"Don't say that, Chasel. You've done more than enough for Thaddeus-really, you have."

Evadne blinked, eyes aching with unshed tears. "Oh, by the way-l went to see Uncle with Suri the other day. He

askedto pass along a message."

"He... he wantedto tell you he's sorry."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line.

"It's all in the past. Except for how hard he tried to stopfrom being with Cassius, honestly, | never hated him

—not even for a moment, not as a child or an adult."

Chasel took a deep breath, as if forcing herself to hold something back, then let out a laugh that sounded almost

at peace. "But looking back, | probably should have listened to Dad. If | hadn't gotten involved with Cassius back

then, | think I'd be a lot happier now. So much happier."

When the call ended, Evadne felt as if she'd been trampled by an army utterly drained and desolate.

She could hear it in Chasel's voice: she still hadn't let go of Thaddeus.

But how were they supposed to mend a wound so deep it cut to the bone?

Just then, her phone buzzed, and a Whatmessage flashed across the

screen:

[Big Brother: Evadne, I've found where Chasel is. I'm flying to Country M tonight to find her.]

A heavy weight pressed on Evadne's chest, but she replied with as much cheer as she could muster:

[You have to bring her back to me! Good luck, big brother!]

[Big Brother: If you're tired, don't push yourself. Suri and the others can help you too.]

Jason approached with a mug of freshly brewed coffee, setting it gently on the table.

"President Ashbourne, the weather's awful today-freezing rain and sleet, roads are a mess. Maybe you should

postpone your site visit until tomorrow."

"Alright, that sounds reasonable."

Evadne took a sip of coffee, pausing thoughtfully. "This afternoon, go withto visit Grandpa."

After lunch, Jason drove Evadne to Havenbrook Villa.

"Grandpa, I've cto see you!"

She had barely stepped inside when she saw Hamilton, dressed neatly and sitting

in his wheelchair, being pushed toward the door by Mr. Murray.

"llana, you're here." Hamilton smiled warmly, though his eyes flickered with

surprise he clearly hadn't expected her.

"Grandpa, are you going out?"

"Yes, to visit an old friend."

"The weather's awful, Grandpa. Letdrive you."

Before she could finish, Hamilton waved her off. "No need, Ilana. Murray will take me. It's bitterly

cold why don't you head hand

cback in a day or two, or wait

here for me? I'll join you for dinner when | get back."

Evadne's suspicions were instantly aroused. Grandpa had always been open with her, never hiding anything. She

know every one of his surviving old friends-she'd either met them or heard the stories.

There was no reason to be so evasive.

As soon as she heard the luxury car pull out of the driveway, Evadne dashed out of the villa, jumpedanto

her own car and ordered Jason,

“Jason, follow them!"
