Chapter 1659:

The two of them spent the rest of the afternoon playing together again. But Nina didn’t mention the gift she'd

been preparing for him. She planned to give it to him on Christmas Eve, along with a proper apology.

That evening, just before dinner, Jerhappened to see her placing the little wooden figurine into her pink box.

Something stirred in his chest. “Nina.”

“Can | ask you something?”

“Go ahead,” Nina answered without thinking much of it.

“If you had to choose betweenand Damian...” Jerpressed his lips together, a complicated expression

crossing his face. “Who would you pick?”

Nina blinked, confused. “Why would | have to choose just one?” Hadn't her mom said it was okay to have lots of

friends?

“I mean if...” Jerclearly wanted an answer.

Nina shook her head. “I don’t know.”

Jerome's bright eyes dulled a little. In the past, she would've chosen him without a second thought. But now...

Even without a straight answer, he understood.

“Jerome, can you please not askthat kind of question again?” Nina didn't like being put on the spot and

spoke honestly. “None of my other friends askthings like that.”

“Alright.” Jerfelt something shift inside him, something hard to name.

Nina nodded.

For grown-ups, choosing between people you cared about was already hard.

For someone as kind-hearted as Nina, it was even tougher.

After that day, Jerkept chatting with her as usual.

When Christmas came, Nina gave him the gift and apologized for her earlier thoughtlessness. Things between

them seemed to return to how they were before. Tflew by.

Jesse got into the top grade school in Alerith with the highest scores, becoming the youngest in his class.

As for Nina, she was still attending kindergarten.

Tmoved quickly, and soon enough, it was Nina's turn to start grade school. Before she enrolled, Jerome

visited her several times, hoping she’d pick the sschool as him. But she turned him down flatly, choosing

instead to attend Jesse's school. Jesse, of course, had played a part in her decision.

One day during the summer break, Nina looked at Jesse's schedule, packed to the brim with tutoring sessions

and enrichment classes. She felt a bit overwhelmed. “Jesse.”

“What's up?” Jesse replied, absorbed in his studies.

“Can’t you be a little less competitive?” Nina, now six years old and a bit wiser, added, “Didn't we say we'd go

out and play during the summer break?”

“| cleared three days.” Jesse circled a few dates on his schedule.

Nina pouted. What could they possibly do in just three days?

She looked at his packed timetable, then at her relatively empty one. A strange wave of guilt settled over her.

They were both children of the sparents—so why was she so different from him?

“If you're bored, go to Jeucwell and visit Damian.” Jesse wasn't interested in playtime. He was incredibly

disciplined. “Mr. Shaw called Mom a few days ago to ask if you were visiting during the break.”
